Publishing

Was originally produced for the Super NES, but was canceled by developer/publisher Nintendo shortly before its scheduled release in 1995 despite being complete and ready to ship. One reason given for the cancelation was the imminent release of the Nintendo 64 console; many elements of Star Fox 2 were re-used in Star Fox 64. Another reason speculated was that Nintendo felt Star Fox 2's 3D graphics would compare poorly with PlayStation games.

Graphics and art design

Star Fox 2 features a locked frame rate of 20 frames per second, after programmer Dylan Cuthbert's efforts to achieve 30fps resulted in inconsistent performance. Cuthbert told IGN in an interview: "20fps was par for the course back then (it took 3 "v-blank" interrupts to transfer the graphics "safely" to the screen's VRAM). My rewrite of the engine subsequently allowed it to run at 30fps by using some tricks to speed up that transfer, but we locked to 20 for a consistent frame-rate." 1

Game technologies

Was intended to feature a Super FX GSU-2 chip built into the cartridge, which was an advanced version of the original Super FX chip used in the first Star Fox and which enabled the Super NES console to render 3D graphics.
